Fr. Jan Koczy is a member of the Society of the Divine Word, commonly known as the Divine Word Missionaries (SVD- Societas Verbi Divini). He was born in Raciobórz in 1967, in Silesia, Poland. He is the youngest of the three siblings. He grew up in Rudyszwałd where he lived until joining the Society. From the early years of his childhood, he served as an altar server, which greatly influenced his vocation. At the same time he desired to become a missionary. He attended an elementary school in Chałupki and graduated in 1982. The following four years of high school gave him an opportunity to learn more about the mission field and strengthen his motivation for becoming a missionary. Having finished high school, in 1986, Jan Koczy entered the Novitiate of the Society of the Divine Word in Chludowo, near Poznan, Poland. The following year he began his philosophical studies in Nysa, and finished them in 1989. He studied theology for four years in the SVD Missionary Seminary in Pieniężno, interrupted by a one-year pastoral practice in the St. Margaret Parish in Bytom, Silesia.
After his priestly ordination in May, 1994, he was assigned to work pastorally for two years in Dolnia Pustevny, a town at the north-western border of the Czech Republic (Sluknov). In February, 1997, he went to Ecuador, South America, to work as a missionary. Until August, 1998, he served as a pastoral-assistant of the St. Brother Michael Parish in Guasmo, a poor district of Guayaquil. Then, he became the pastor of the neighboring “Divine Word” Parish. He was the pastor there for two years until he was transferred to Ventanas in the Los Rios Province, where he has been working as the pastor up until the present moment. After one year of ministering at this location, he began building a parish house and church. Noticing the needs of the children of the parish, last year (2005) he established the “St. Joseph Freinademetz SVD – Fu Shen Fu” Foundation. This Foundation has four goals: feeding needy children, providing them with medical assistance, education, and formation. The parish where Fr. Jan Koczy, SVD, works is a very poor parish; and the local people cannot offer much financial assistance to support the services of the Foundation. Therefore, please consider helping these needy children. HELP US TO HELP CHILDREN AND THEIR FAMILIES!
All donations or Holy Mass stipends may help the Foundation and Fr. Jan Koczy to continue to do this important work of HELPING THESE NEEDY CHILDREN.
